If you pull up the picture of the 460 you'll notice the square valve
chamber above the piston indicating it to be a slide valve engine. I won't
say that there's never been superheated slide valve engines but usually if
a conversion to piston valves is done the engine is also converted to
superheat at the same time. That entails changing the front and rear tube
sheets to accommodate the superheat bundles. Other than that and some
piping in the smokebox area there's nothing external to indicate a heated
engine. The process is all automatic, no cab controls. There were any
number of non-heated piston valve engines but few with slide valves but
without opening the smokebox door it's a little hard to be sure.
