Bob,
I don't have many of my books here with me in Peru. What was #50? I know of only a handful of narrow gauge engines saved. In Chimbote is the hulk of #20 a Baldwin 2-8-0. The area of the shops and station in Chimbote have been over run with businesses and markets. Not much escapes the scrappers here in Peru. In Columbia, Bolivia, Chile, Brasil and Argentina many locomotives both preserved and dumped exist. It also very hard to find someone old enough to have remembered the railroads in some areas of Peru. Many locals do not know the history of the area.
I still hold out hope that somewhere is a locomotive that is forgotten and abandoned. Unfortunately there is a scrap metal smelter in Chimbote. We had been planning a trip to Huancayo in the next few weeks before returning to the US. However it is the rainy season in Andes and many of the main roads are impassable into the Mountains. Puno is now having some major flooding problems near Lake Titicaca. We may have to wait till the Winter when we return in July. We will be in Ecuador for a tour on the G&Q.
