"If the Commission want to run the shops, maintainance and so on.....
Why don't they just run the whole shebang and hire a full time manager and a full time marketing person and make sure the capital improvements are made and just say "this is our railroad and we are going to by-God run it well."
I honestly don't see how they can possibly expect to split the operations and actually make the thing fly without a bunch of problems... "

That is PRECISELY what was about to happen before the two New Mexico commissioners were replaced.
It now looks like we are into a 'compromise'. Compromises always work badly. I would either give the whole mess back to the RGRPC or have the commssion keep the whole mess. If it were MY call, I'd have the Commision keep it. I cannot imagine them doing a worse job of it than did the RGRPC, but they probably COULD.

The way i see it, if we HAVE to have a compromise, the Commission should keep ALL shop work, track work and the Operations crews. Let the RGRPC market the place, sell tickets, deliver passengers to the cars, sell trinkets and feed them. There is a LOT of money to be made in those endeavors. There should be a minimum of confusion and finger-pointing, although I would expect some problems.
It will be up to the two entities to bend over backward to try to cooperate and solve those issues before they become serious. Past history does not make me comfortable that this will happen.
BUT. If the opportunity exists, the RGRPC should grab it and run with it.
