So, true. It takes lots of money and it takes the right people. I recall reading that Bob Richardson tried to save a C-25 if I remember correctly and the D&RGW hastened the scrapping of said C-25 so he couldn't have it! I'm reading one of his books on the RGS right now about the RGS records he tried to save at Ridgway and was allowed to carry out one box of records, no more. The railroad was dead, but the owner of the building at the time (a mine owner, I believe) simply wanted it all gone and didn't want anyone else to have it. I understand more survived though so apparently someone snatched a few items before they could be destroyed. To most people, an old steam engine is just like an old car or an old washing machine. It's just a rusty old piece of metal and if it's in the way, it's got to go. If you love a railroad, locomotive, etc, vote with your $$$$!
