I’ve long noticed that an engine will slip at a grade crossing more predictably than anywhere else, making for some pretty embarrassing grade crossing whistles. I figure it is due to the extra polish the rails get from the auto traffic, the molecules of tire rubber left on the rail heads, or it could just be that the engine knows that’s the best place to screw with you since your throttle hand is otherwise occupied.
