A number of questions (and appologies for how far off track this thread has become!!!). I associated the term "helper" with the second locomotive of a train that helps push or pull the train up hills. With a single locomotive #19 performing the "Austin night helper" job, how did the SVR refer to locomotives performing actual helper duty? Did they call them extras, or...? Did the SVR ever use helpers on a regular basis, or was it usually cheaper to have a single crew make multiple trips? Next question, if #19 could only pull 5 loaded cars uphill from Austin to Tipton, how many could it handle downhill from Tipton to Whitney?
