Those two engines provided most of the power on the WP&YR during ww2. A typical northbound train was three engines leaving Skagway. A WP&YR 70 series or USA 190 series lead engine, a USA 250 series K-28 midtrain helper, and #69 pushing at the rear. #69 was cut out at the White Pass and she brought any empties stacked there down the hill. The K-28 stayed on till Fraser or Bennett, depending where empty cars were stacked, then took them down the hill to Skagway. The lead Mikado could take the whole train to Whitehorse from the top of the White Pass. A K-28 was often kept at Whitehorse to push trains up the hill out of town and for yard work.
