Good points, all! I wanted to start a "marketing" discussion. I agree that there a lot of potential "rail enthusiasts" and train riders out there. They just don't know it yet. The challenge, as Les suggests, is reaching them.
The D&S has tried numerous marketing ploys over the years. Some I've personally liked, some I haven't. But the numbers show that they must be doing something right. As for the C&TS, I think one of the biggest disgraces there is that the State of Colorado has done so pitifully little to publicize an attraction in which it is part owner. I think that does a disservice to both the railroad and the region in which it is located.
A final note on Trinidad. I personally think that Trinidad is a relatively undiscovered historical jewel. I also think a ride up the old C&W would be quite neat. My point in my earlier post was that such an operation (good track notwithstanding) would be a challenge (financial and otherwise) to launch. If the principals know that going in and are prepared to "sweat it out," more power to 'em!
