Don't hold your breath over the mines being a savior of the Creede branch. First of all, even in their heyday the mines never produced large tonnages. They were by and large lode deposits, which usually means veins. What made them valuable was the precious metal content. But they did not ship large tonnages.
What the railroads do carry quite a bit of, though, are things like coal, potash, perlite, and things of that nature. But these are not present in the Creede area -- at least not yet. So the Creede branch would have to exist on tourists.
