A number of Friends members, including some fine volunteers, live in or near Los Alamos. We must all pray that they are safe and that their property will be spared. And to do what we can for them if and when that time comes.
If things don't change, certainly fire will be a potential concern for the C&TS. I think much of the forest in the immediate vicinity of the tracks is much healthier and less susceptible to fire than the area around Los Alamos, but under such dry conditions anything can happen. South of the Rio de Los Pinos, the north-facing slope across from Toltec siding to about Sublette has a serious infestation of pine-beetle or spruce budworm, with lots of dead or dying trees. Under dry conditions, that is a real tinder-box. This year could be a very bad fire year if conditions don't change, and typically it is fairly dry from now until mid-July. Hope for rain.
