Hi,
A tangential item is when I was railfanning Rome, GA c1975.
Rome was a rail and manufacturing center. I walked up an embankment/levee along a river bank because the bridge was obviously a railroad bridge. When I got to the top, weeds covered everything and I walked towards the bridge. I saw rails and got excited - they were narrower than 56.5"! Since I was running late, I checked the gauge with my 11" long foot.
It was only later when the photo was developed that I realized the dark spots where the running rails had been removed - the guard rails were left in place. darned
