The 40 has gotten around quite a bit during its lifetime. I first ran into it back in 1968 when it was set aside at the San Salvador roundhouse of the IRCA, where it had spent most of its life on the Salvador division of the IRCA. I have been unable to find a picture of the 40 back then, but the first picture below is sister 44 at San Salvador in 1968.
The consolidations were work horses on the IRCA, and the second picture is of a slightly larger and more modern IRCA 2-8-0 working as a mid-train helper on a Guatemala City to Zacapa freight in March 1970, shortly after the Guatemala division of the IRCA had been nationalized.
Finally, in September 2000 I ran across the 40 on the White Pass. If I remember correctly it spent two years on the White Pass.
Perhaps somebody else can fill in the interesting details about the 40's (and 44's) move from Salvador to Colorado, and their time in Colorado.
A nice little engine. The IRCA consolidations were a favorite of mine.
