Charlie Talbert was killed on April 17, 1909, when Bridge 108A Sagged under his train and the engine tipped over against the bank. He was firing on Second No. 1, the 35 Class "Calumet" engine. Charlie was trapped between the cab door and the tender and the tender rolled over on his lower body before he could get free. Three other men were in the cab, engineer Bert Nash and conductor Ed Skoog riding on the right side and brakeman Frank Richardson riding with Talbert on the left. None of the other three were injured, in spite of the fact that Richardson had to climb over the backhead and through the steam pipes to escape through the right side (up-side) cab window.
