Don't get me started on natural gas, I worked for a natural gas company for 9 months up in the Texas panhandle, we made just as much of our money off the little bit of liquids that came up with the gas as the gas itself. Natural gas is a very smart energy source (if you look at carbon released per btu) the infrastructure just normally isn't there for it and therefore no market. Cars can run off of it, just as cars can run off of propane with modifications. The facilities just aren't in place to do this.
Like in North Dekota, the oil is more valuable and piping is expensive so flare the gas and just worry about the liquid... I have heard stories from my professors about the 1970s in the middle east. They were flaring so much natural gas it was day time 24/7...
