Someone mentioned 375 having had a long smokebox. It was probably built that way.
The two C-21 class engines both had much longer smokeboxes when they came out of the Baldwin shops. Their near-sister CB&Q #537's smokebox was never shortened. It extended right out to the pilot beam. To the best of my knowledge, the stack location was never moved on any of these engines, remaining as built, directly in line at the center of the cylinder exhausts.
I'm sure any stack location other than this would be very unusual.
Anyway, I just wanted to add to the discussion that many engines were actually engineered and built with long smokeboxes.
