Don,
You might have fallen victem to some optical allusions regarding stack placement. Stacks are almost always directly over the centerline of the clyinders. In rare instances, they would be moved ahead on old engines that were getting superheaters, to make room for the header. To do so would require an exhaust stand with an "S" curve in it, and was avoided when possible.
