I'm not sure of the proper naming conventions, however I have seen blueprints from the mid to late 1800s for A-Frame turntables that say "Gallows" in the title block.
As far as I know the A-Frame style came first, then the larger style, as in your photograph, was developed for larger motive power. Which quickly gave way to riveted iron plate truss style turntables.
I would agree that the A-Frame and the (for lack of a better term) Four-Post turntables are both "Gallows" style.
