A comment or three on the tradition and trivia sub thread. As most of the sother rails on here will agree (I hope) A lot of what passes for tradition probably came from the railroads having learned early on that everything needed to be covered by "boilerplate" Also take into consideration all the rest of the "documents" issued by the Operating Department; with train orders being right at the top of the list. There could be no room for "interpretation" as to whether something (class of engine, for instance) was included or excluded. Even with that mentality look at all the various intrepretations that were made of a specific set of train orders. One of my favorite reads was the column that Peter Josserand wrote for the American Train Dispatcher's Association that discussed train orders and the (mis)intrepretation of them. Then in keeping with the boilerplate tradition, after steam was gone there had to be somewhere to use all the metal. Andy
