Mike:
My post was not to dispute anything you wrote, was just to point out that the D&RGW did occassionally bend or break the rule. I would post the photos, but I have been given a one-time use of them for the snow fighting books I am doing so I do not have permission to post them here. I have no date on the photos, but I am thinking was 1949 as the had a bad winter on Cumbres in 49.
The D&RGW had restrictions on many bridges including no K36s or K37s on the bridges on the Crested Butte branch until 1941 when they strengthened the two bridges on the branch to accomodate the larger power. Doubleheading of K36s and K37s was not permitted across the Almont bridge even after it was made stronger.
I think the D&RGW could have done something to Lobato or Cascade if they really felt it necessary. But putting the helper mid-train out of Antonito and stopping out of Chama to allow one at time to cross was no big deal operationally.
