... then here's 3,000 reasons from Ernie Robart -

Ernie has more than 9,000 slides of the Narrow Gauge Over Cumbres taken in the years 1965-1975.
He will be showing a small selection of them during the presentation 'The Early History of the C&TS'
that he and Terry Ross will be giving on Sunday evening, August 29 and Monday evening, August 30
as part of the 40th Anniversary Celebration.

Some of what the volunteers faced in May, 1970, and tackled with mostly just hand tools and determination:
