On Saturday, 06/19, I didn't even take my camera along; we spent the whole day cleaning parts for the
Stephenson valve gear, assembling and riveting the links, and trying to figure out what went where.
By Sunday morning Phil had completed most of the valve gear assembly; after riveting, some grinding
was needed for clearance
:
It's a good thing that Phil has a LOT of experience with Steam; most of the parts weren't labeled when they were taken off, a few were painted where they shouldn't have been, and some of them were scattered around the yard and mixed in with parts from other locomotives. One of the 'missing links' I found on a pallet among some (ugh!) diseasel parts is shown here to the lower right
:
Some of these parts that Phil carries around and fits into place with one hand I can barely carry with two. By noon on Sunday enough of the valve gear was back together to show the rest of the crew how things should go together
:
Adam, Andy, Greg and Ken will be on their own this week, readying the boiler for a preliminary hydro test, while Phil & I head up to Santa Margarita to help Brad, Ed and Jeff with the Old Time Tractor Meet and PCRy Steam-Up - see the link on Jeff Badger's post at [
ngdiscussion.net].
That's all for now!
