Since I was very, very fortunate to have ridden the NPS special back in 1968, I'd like to add a few sidelights.
It was a two day trip from Durango-Antonito with an overnight in Chama as you probably already know. Heading up Cumbres we were bucking snow quite a bit of the way. In fact we stalled out twice that I remember and had to back up and make another run at it. We were busting through 2-3 foot drifts, in classic NG fashion.
But one of the highlights of the trip, in retrospect, was the food on the train. It was delicious, and catered by the La Fonda Hotel of Santa Fe, which at that time was still a Fred Harvey hotel. The hotel manager was the one who oversaw that end of the operation on the train. What is interesting is that his name was -- BILL HARVEY -- a grandson of Fred Harvey. You talk about history repeating itself.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
