A little clarification: It wasn't the speed of the passenger train that kept the line clear but rather the frequency. Two trains a day with wedge plows and priest flangers kept the accumulation from becoming unmanageable. After the daily San Juan quit running the freights would get three or more days worth of accumulation and that would frequently mean rotary and/or spreader trains to open the line.
