Ice can be super dangerous. If any of you have seen our "Plow Extras" video released in 1988, we have lots of wedge plow action where they go 30-40 mph and bust drifts with a pair of diesels pushing this exciting wedge plow. Well we got some old film that was taken in 1971 of a plow wreck while it was plowing. Three Geep 9's made 2 passes into this deep cut that was on a branch line and hadn't been plowed in a month or more. It was filled over the top of the plow. Lots of sightseers were out, including a lady with a camera, who filmed the second and third runs. On the third try they backed up about half a mile and made a good run at it, only to hit ice at the bottom of the cut, and the plow went up like a ski jump, the rear truck fell off in the air stiking the front of the first Geep, and tore the hood off as the nose flipped the plow. I got the plow foreman on camera recounting this experience. He was never in a plow again after that, and was the head maintenance guy in Stratford from then on.
As luck would have it in 1988 they decided to run a CN plow extra on that branch and I got a shot near that same spot 17 years later(not much snow there in 88 though. Ice can be a nasty thing when buried like that!
End of my holiday snow story!
