FWIW - I did some checking. It appears the Furka Bergstrecke extension to Oberwald is essentially complete and is scheduled to commence service in June of 2010.
Of interest is that the downhill approach to the Oberwald terminus has been rerouted to minimize the disruption to road traffic. It seems the Abt rack rail is higher than the running rails. This presents a hazard to cyclists and road traffic in general at "level" crossings. I's also a maintenance headache for the RR crews.
The Muttbach road crossing on the mountain between Gletsch and the old Furka tunnel was regraded to eliminate the need need to extend the rack through that crossing. Unfortunately this was not possible at the Oberwald crossing. After a serious study of alternatives, the preservation group decided to install a retractable rack segment through the crossing.
Pretty clear those Swiss!
Best Regards,
