A guided tour of Internet Info on Furka Cogway Steam Railway

December 26, 2009 07:27AM avatar
Hi Guys,
I have always wanted to take time to read more about Furka Cogway Steam Railway, so Christmas day is allowing me the time, thought I would share with you a guided tour of the information available on the internet since I read German and Engilsey I thought I'd help out some people if interested. The results of the study is that I just signed up to become a member for the Eur40 per year.

The main page in English. [www.furka-bergstrecke.ch] The Route Map [www.v-f-b.info]
They have 3 seperate businesses entities to preserve, restore and run the historic railroad.
-1 The foundation which is orginazed to find the funding necessary for all projects, here in english: [www.s-f-b.info]
-2 The Dampfbahn Furka-Bergstrecke AG (Furka Cogwheel Steam Railway Company - DFcool smiley with registered office in Oberwald was founded as the company legally responsible towards public authorities and the law. [www.furka-bergstrecke.ch]
-3 And the umbrella organisation VFB (Furka Cogwheel Steam Railway Cis lub) which structured into entirely 23 independent sections, Switzerland (12), Germany ( 9), The Netherlands (1), Belgium (1). The sections with a total of 7000 members present the VFB at fairs, exhibitions, and further events so connecting the association to a wide public. [www.v-f-b.info]
I think this is one of the best organized, distributed support groups to form around the preservation of a historical steam railroad, close rivals have to be the Friends of the Cumbres & Toltec and the Friends of the East Broad Top railroads. It is an amazing achievement to support a railroad locally that is so far away and to organize work groups to travel on vacation time to participate in the rebuilding and maintenance of the railroad. I hope that we can create something simular one day for the PerusPiraPora 60cm cement railroad here in Brazil. I wish there was a forum for these organizations to exchange "best practices" and experiences internationally. Any suggestions, like an international "TRAIN" organisation?

If you click on the pictues at the bottom you can see the bridge that they take down every year so that it is not destroyed by avalanches.

Overview Locomotives, currently 4 steam, one day they will be like the C&Ts was with 3 classes of steam running.

Unfortunetly, only in German but the amazing chronic of how they recovered, practically stole the 4 rack engines back from Vietnam in 1990, two have been restored. They should definitely translate this recovery story, like hauling old airplanes out of the Jungle... [www.furka-bergstrecke.ch]
Story of Da Lat cog railway [www.vnafmamn.com]

This is the website about the seperate Group formed in Chur to restore and rebuild to "as new" condition the 2 largest Engines that they returned from Vietnam in 1990, the website is in 6 languages, Arabic, German, English, French, Italien and Russian! Worth exploring.

They are also completely restoring to operation a 1913 RotorySnowPlow. Again only in German.
But just a look a the pictures of the work is great, amazing gear drive, makes the american course bevel gear drives look crude, which they are but work. [www.dampfschleuder.ch]
Interesting is to look closely at the pictues of the firebox roof anker bolts which on the end passing through the crownsheet are very eaten away, it seems strange that the whole bolt is not corroded equally, I think it may have something to do with the copper firebox material but I have no experience to back this, copper fireboxes are becoming very rare. [www.dampfschleuder.ch]

The website says that there are only 3 operational rotary snow plows in the world White Pass & Yukon, Cumbres and Toltec and an amazing self moving, mallet one on the Rhätischen Bahn (more here [de.wikipedia.org] , [www.mec-weber-dresden.de]) .

Also the pictures of the major overhall from the smallest engine #6, interesting also are the pictures of the childern participating in a safe and productive way, almost all locomotive projects involve needle scaling just like the little guy is doing. I got my start that way as a volunteer at the George Town Loop railroad.
[www.dampfschleuder.ch] , [www.dampfschleuder.ch]

Since I just signed up to become a member maybe I can take a ride finally in 2011.

Happy Holidays
Thor

PS. I've got my own little Vietnam locomotive jungle recovery operation to support here, care to join us, this next year we will have to transport between 4 and 13 locomotives away from the mine.
