I thought it was common practice to double head east out of Durango, I have seen on Green Frogs "Best of the Narrow Gauge" the 497 and 492 heading east with a long freight. I think that the short distance between Durango and Carbon Jct. wouldn't have posed any problems as the grade was minimal.
