You may be right about the crawling across the trestle not being in the story you read. It may be that Les Jarrett told me that as we talked about the incident. It may be that I read it, or that Les told me that Norwood told him that when he interviewed him for one of his early videos.
As I recall the crew was stranded in the cab with not much by the time he got there. It was really a very heroic trek when you consider the distance, the storm, and the overall bad conditions.
In 1997 I spent a lot of time in Indy when Les and I edited the last America By Rail video, and during my waiting time for editing to happen I read some old stuff Les had in books, etc. One of the things I read was the first trips of the C&TS moves that Jay is adding (today in History). It too was fascinating to see the rough time it was to get all the stuff from Antonito with one engine and a railroad that was mothballed for essentially 2 years.
The Norwood story was a sidebar to the recounting of the 1952 storm in I think the Dorman book, but as you say the story is in more than one place. I'll never forget the tripping over the wires, which gives some perspective as to the depth of snow on Cumbres and the Los Pinos valley....wow!
