Earl brought up an interesting point. No one has posted how to properly blow down a water glass or water column. Here is the way to do it as described by a Missouri Pacific booklet from 1952.
1. Open water column drain valve wide, then close.
2. Open drain cock wide at bottom of water glass.
3. Close top water glass cock and note full blow of water from drain.
4. Close bottom water glass cock and note that both top and bottom water glass cokcs shut off tight.
5. Open top water glass cock wide and note full blow of steam from drain.
6. Open bottom water glass cock wide.
7. With water glass drain valve still open, open bottom gauge cock. If water does not continue to blow blow from bottom gauge cock, this indicates boiler connection at bottom of water column is restrictedm and this should be reported immediatly and corrected.
To test a water glass do as shown in Items 2,3,4,5 and 6.
