I will say this much. Any one who has no idea how to safely use a trycock, or isn't aware of their limitations, has no #$%^@@&%*!! buisiness being on a steam engine of any kind. The two things I think are over board on the new regs are the need to submit samples (thick ness testing is enough, do we think that non corroded steel turns to pot metal?) and the requirement to have two water glasses. The latter is ok if you are running a Northern, but on the little dinks we have there is simply no good place to put it. we have a little prarie that we are putting back together, and the boiler is simply too small, the glass will get in the way of the throttle. Typical gov. redundant stuff, "Oh, another water glass will insure that the crown sheet stays covered."
Puh-Leeze
Any one who can't read a trycock probably hasn't got the sense to keep up another guage glass, either.
