Well, since somebody else brought up the subject, here is my take on the issue. Some of my best friends are lawyers. And the rule of law is a wonderful thing. But when lawyers control the legislatures that make the law, they have created a feeding trough for themselves. It is only human nature. It is a HUGE conflict of interest. Talk about monopolies. Look at what happens everytime something like no-fault insurance comes up in a legislature. A large part of the legal complexities we face are a direct result of the legislatures not having any incentive to make the laws simple enough for a common college graduate to understand. We need a constitutional amendment that limits the number of lawyers who can serve in the legislatures and other governmental law-making bodies so that they can play their proper role as legal advisors and NOT as decision-makers about the laws that affect their own livelihood. Not easy to accomplish fairly, but if they can write the income tax laws, they can find a way. But what is really sad is I learn most of my lawyer jokes from my lawyer friends, it not as if they don't understand the conflict and the unfair power they have. They understand it all too well. So I'm not holding my breath.
