This is in regard to the hoses around the sand dome, or steam dome, but urelated to the pipe on the 463. I have seen pictures of locomotives up here on the SVRy with a hose wrapped around the steam dome or sand dome. In the pictures I've seen, the hose connects to a valve teed into the engineers side injector line near the boiler check. My understanding is they were used with a hose nozzle on the end of the hose for a ready source of water for putting our ROW fires. Presumably the fireman would uncoil the hose open the valve and the engineer would operate the injector while the fireman acted as fireman in the other sense.
