Every source I've run across regarding the painting of stars on the drivers of SP locomotives has stated that the stars were used to designate the installation of the SP's patented spring pad lubricator.
I don't argue that the 1744 has the stars, and that she is not equipped with these lubricators, but somehow in the intervening 50 or so years since SP owned her I suspect that somebody decided that stars looked good on her, and applied them.
I would check out historical photos of 1744 in service on the Espee to confirm that she did not have these while in service on the Espee. If she did have them, well... it won't be the first time a bunch of SP "experts" have been proved wrong.
