I read the same thing that Chile John wrote, the Chinese would paint the entire wheel red which would make any cracks stand out from the dark grease that would accumulate in the crack. I also think I read the Chinese would silver solder the tires to the wheel instead of heat-shrinking them on. The Chinese didn't make a wide variety of steam locomotives but tried to fine tune the designs the designs they had.
