Restoration work needed on the Colorado Historical Society's Historic Locomotive Engine #9 to include the following work:
Cylinders: Bore cylinders; Build up pistons; Replace piston rings; Machine piston rods; Machine new nuts for piston rods; Install pistons and rings; Machine new valve balance inserts; Machine & lap slide valve seats; Machine & lap slide valves; Machine new valve chest studs; Install valve chest and studs; Machine valve stems to fit valve reach rods; Turn & grind valve stems; Machine balance plates; Make new copper gaskets for valve chest and cylinder heads. Assemble valve chest; Assemble cylinders; Machine new piston & valve rod packing Crossheads & Guides: Machine guides; Babbitt line crosshead shoes & machine; Ream wristpin and piston rod holes; Machine new wrist pin; Align guides to cylinder bores; Assemble cross heads & guides; Tram cross head guides; Replace frame bolt on lead truck equalizer spring cross member.
Driver: Turn & grind axles; Turn or replace crank pins; Replace L-2 hub liner; Level frame; Tram frame; Machine new crown brasses; Press old crown brasses out; Slot crown brass seats in boxes if needed; Press in new crown brasses; Replace wear plate on driving boxes with new steel plate; Build up and machine boxes to allow them to tilt in the frame; Build & machine spring saddle seats. Build new oil cellars; Check hub liners for proper lateral clearance; Make a pattern for shoes & wedges; Lay out shoes & wedges; Machine new shoes & wedges; Install drives back into frame. Main & side rods: Have new main rods & straps water jet cut; Machine new main rods & straps; Machine new main rod strap bolts; Make a pattern for new main rod brasses & have them cast; Machine new main rod brasses. Have new side rods water jet cut; Machine new side rods; Machine new side rod brasses; Press brasses in to side rods; Machine new knuckle pins; Install main and side rods.
Lead truck: Disassemble lead truck; Machine new axle; Bore out new wheels and press on to axle; Rebuild swing motion; Machine bearing boxes for proper bearing fit; Make a pattern & cast new brasses; Assemble lead truck; Install lead truck; Install pilot plow. Valve gear: Make a pattern for the eccentric straps; Machine new eccentric straps; Fit eccentric blades to straps; Machine new pins & bushings; Machine new link block; Fit link block to links; Rebuild rocker boxes; Correct out alignment of tumbling shaft; Install links so that they hang straight; Install valve gear; Replace bearings in rocker boxes; Turn journals on rocker shafts; Set valves.
Spring rigging: Build up #3 swords that they fit the driving boxes properly; Replace shims on the #2 saddles that that they fit the boxes properly; Install brake rigging; Machine new pins and bushings. Assemble spring rigging
Brake rigging: Replace pins and ream holes to remove slop; Install brake rigging; Air Brake System: Install new air pump; Clean & test brake valves; Clean & test governor; Hammer & hydro air reservoir Install safety valve on reservoir Boiler: Install new try cocks; Check water glass height; Remove firebrick; Remove plumbing in cab; Remove jacket & insulation to access staybolts; Replace staybolts in the braking zones; Have staybolt holes welded up; Have fire cracks in rear tube sheet repaired; Tap out washout plugholes; Machine new wash out plugs; Replace fire door ring; Install new Von Boden oil burner; Replace the fire pan with one designed for an oil burner; Replace steam lines & shut out valves to injectors; Mount fireman's water glass at the same height as the engineer's; Install new air compressor; Hydro boiler Install boiler jacket & insulation; Install plumbing in cab; Replace gasket on smoke stack base; Install oil line heater; Annual state boiler inspection; Replace firebrick; Build a new exhaust nozzle; Build new petty coat pipes; Test fire; Build a new bear trap stack
Tender: Install safety chain on the back of the tender; Replace tender through rods; Install water valve on the fireman's side of the tender; Perform annual on tender trucks; Check nuts & bolts on frame; Install oil tank heater; Adjust coupler pocket
Frame: Replace frame bolts on upper frame rail cross the to of the cylinders; Replace binder bolts; Replace rocket box frame bolts
The contractor will need to provide photo documentation (Before/during/after) and written narrative per collections Management Policy, of all work preformed on engine and tender.
