It actually all started with a Tyco HO train set one Christmas (I was less than 10 years old...).
I grew up in a small town in Kansas a few blocks from the Rock Island tracks. I used to ride my bicycle over to the tracks and watch the trains go by. I would watch the local industries (grain elevator, etc.) when they were being switched. I was initially fascinated by diesels (never knew what you were going to see on the Rock from day to day in the 60's & 70's).
My interests took a radical shift when my father planned our first summer vacation to Durango in 1970 (I would have been 12 at the time). We stayed in cabin at some place called Coolwater Ranch just below Vallecito, and my dad had booked a ride on the D&RGW Silverton train..............
