I think that some are missing a subtle point that if the box car coaches are not going to be used for operations then we need to preserve them particularly from the elements. Since they are essentiallly open cars they either need to be cocoon wraped or returned to their box car configuaration just to protect them from the elements. If you have seen what the weather can do to an unprotected car floor and frame you would see my point. There is a good reason that all the wood frame flat cars have had to have their frames replaced, known as mother nature. Yes the unused box car coaches have some boards over the window openings but I imagine plenty of rain and snow gets in and with poor ventilation does its harm.
