What was done last year was to remove all the stuff except the jacket from the boiler of 483, in preparation for asbestos removal. 483 and 492 are siting side by side in the old roundhouse, so it is hoped they can both be done at once. The estimate i heard was $10,000 apiece, since it has to be done by a 'professionsl' asbestos remover.
In answer to your question, yes they DID put asbetos under the jacket. Lots of it.
