My first-ever visit to Durango was after #315's restoration was well underway, so I have no first hand knowledge of what happened. However, I believe that the guys simply grew sick of seeing #315 deteriorating in the park, so they got together to try to improve her cosmetically and the project just snowballed...

I've heard that a restoration is probably more likely to succeed if there are lots of retired guys working on it. I'm told that it is not that you end up with more free time when you're retired; rather, when you're retired, your spouse supports your involvement in projects since working on those projects keeps you out of the spouse's hair! smileys with beer
