I do appreciate the suggestion, Phil, but see my comments to Russ. I really have pulled out everything that's in the negative and then some. I actually do this stuff for a living these days, and also work with one of the best pro labs in the country - Photo Craft Imaging in Boulder, CO - so I'm used to figuring out what can (and can't) be done to make quality prints.
Shadow detail is pretty easy to evaluate in negatives. Put this one on the light table, grab a loupe, and you can easily see that there's just nothing there to pull up. The smokebox front is basically full dark, while the area underneath the cab is completely clear. There's nothing there to get at all, and precious little running gear detail forward from there. I've basically used up all the range that's available on the film.
But again, I do appreciate the suggestions.
