You bet, but there're really two things working against me here. The tight angle and the shadows. You can bring up the shadows a bit more, but to do so enough to bring out detail at that angle, you have to create a very artificial look.
As for fill flash, great (or perhaps similarly disturbed) minds think alike. I had no less than three strobes in the bag, but it didn't occur to me until later that I should've tried one. In my defense, things were happening pretty fast. The sunlit parts were awfully bright, and a strobe (even a powerful one) might not have had quite enough umph, but it wouldn't have taken much. I really think it might've made the difference.
