The folks at the Sumpter Valley Ry have done it again!
In 1930 the SVRy decided they could use a gas-mechanical "lokie" to switch the big Oregon Lumber Co. mill at South Baker, OR with the UP mainline at Baker.
They purchased used the little Whitcomb unit seen in this photo used from the Shirley Constuction Co.. She had been built in 1929 for
constuction work but was available for the Stump Dodger in 1930. This photo shows her in service at the Baker, OR depot in 1936.
She worked well for 7 years when the decision was made to buy a larger diesel unit from Davenport with a Catapillar engine. This unit became the famous #101 that is now in Golden as the D&RGW #50.
#100 was replaced and soon "dissapeared" off the
roster of the Stump Dodger. Read on!
