Outstanding story on NPR

April 12, 2005 10:35AM
Yesterday Melissa Block conducted an excellent interview with Tob Garver, assistant to the late O.Wiston Link, perhaps America's greatest rail photographer. Garver explained the recordings as they listened, adding a great deal to the very atmospheric sounds of steam railroading's last great stand, on the Norfolk and Western. Like the photography, the recordings reflected lots of imagination. The sound of Jimbo, a hound-dog, howling to the sound of a homemade three-chime whistle on a N&W 4-8-0 is simply incredible!
