In reviewing the list of projects and funding that the Colorado State Historical Fund administers (see link for the complete list for the past 10 years) it is interesting to see where all the gambling money goes. One would think that Colorado should have some of the best restored and maintained structures/ RR projects in the country given all the $ that the gamblers in Black Hawk, Central City and Leadville are contributing.
Now while perusing this list a thought occurred when I noticed that $99,106.00 had been provided for the restoration of D&RGW #346. Maybe this would be politically impossible, but, what if, the CRRM was to loan the #346 to the Loop for this next season? It has had its boiler rebuilt and perhaps could be made ready for use this season. It is closer to being ready than the C&S #9, could haul more revenue, and perhaps Ulrich could finish the job in time for opening day if enough $ were available. There is even a historical precedent for its use on the C&S. Now here is the kicker. For this loan the CRRM will be appointed to oversee the Loop RR and the profits that are generated will be returned to the CRRM rather than CHS. We get an organization that cares about RR preservation back in charge, and we could conceivably get to see other historic engines from the museum return for cameo appearances...
Maybe this has already been discussed but what a Golden (pun intended) opportunity it would be to turn the tables (pun also intended) on the CHS and kick them into the deadline track in Denver. It would take major political deal making but given the situation it might just be possible. Anybody have plans for a Ridgway spark arrestor handy?
