Carl Hired out in 1952 when the pipe rush hit home. I don't have my roster in front of me (its across the street in the depot), but I belive there were several old heads who hired on in the 1890's that retired that year too. I think Carl got promoted in the late 50's. There was another big hiring spree in 56-57 when Jim Shawcroft and Andy Payne hired on. By the mid 60's most of the old heads ahead of Carl had enough whiskers to work the wide gauge.
I was looking at the new book out on the last years of the NG. There is a nice shot of Carl and 497 in Chama in 1967.
