Spend some time in Antonito and you will see there's a lot of potential tourist traffic that doesn't stop. Most are headed to Taos or Santa Fe on US 285. To continue straight south on 17 might take them into a wilderness they never recover from. If there was someway to get these people to ask about the "Cumbres and Toltec" when they get to their hotel in Taos, they might decide to spend a day and come back.
Granted with higher gas prices it's likely folks are going to plan the trips better. But I still think with some strategic efforts to snag some of these tourists, the railroad can pickup some "walk in" traffic. The Vistor Center in Chama will help, but I think there needs to be some kind of coordinated effort with the town of Antonito to help the east side of the line.
