Had the same thought about the pictures. Have followed this rr for many years, since it began in 1971, when trains were running and the snowshed still stood atop Cumbres. Shame it could not have been 'caught' in time, but that's what the Friends are for now, doing that sort of thing. YOu know, they got their money together, rolled up their sleeves, and worked their a--es off trying to save this rr. Not for the reasons the D&S works, not a chop, just different motivations... not the bottom line, no fake gunfights to 'tease the tourists'... just honest folks running the RR over the darn high mountain. Some folks seem to see evil in what has happened, but they didn't get in there... No, it didn't take big bucks, just a spirit of selfliness and willing to save it, not the desire to "flame" the folks working hard to try to save it. I don't get it, but then, I support the salvation of the railroad in a non-profit organizational style... that's what museums (and this is the only true museum of steam American railroading-64 miles long) are for... not to make profits, nor to line the pockets of some townspeople... their job is to do that...
I salute those Friends, regretting no one was able to save and operate any of the wonderful Illinois Central, and their 4-8-2s...
