Pat,
I heard directly from Henry Posner III regarding this issue. To paraphrase, he requests that people do not inquire into removal of equipment from Guatemala.
When I was in Guatemala in 2006, Jorge Senn (general manager) showed future plans of the railroad to include a rebuild of the line west of Guatemala City. RRDC has hopes of an operational railroad and removal of equipment would symbolize no railroad in Guatemala.
If RRDC is successful to restore operations and more excursions become available, I would recommend going. In 2006, the excursion that Ron McElrath coordinated with Henry Posner was incredible. Dennis Daugherty has helped get steam locomotive 204 in excellent working condition. Where else can you ride 200 miles on narrow gauge thru jungles, over highland deserts, and across high long bridges? Best thing for Guatemala is to hope for a shortage of acetylene and that RRDC can convince the government there that it is for their best interest to have an operational railroad.
