Managed a classic on SUnday - rostered steam loco failed (injector steam valve jammed open
) so th estation master appears in operating meeting demanding diesel driver and I got volunteered..... Was oiling round and had got to the jackshaft missionary boxes (behind the can doors) when I felt the door pushing against me - so I pushed back and was rewarded with sound of metal hitting tarmac and a burst of bad language. I extracted myself and looked out at the hilarious sight of "Spannerman" wearing the contents of his tea can
. He'd seen the can door ajar, and, typically for him not thought that there was a reason for this. So he put tea can by door and tried to open further......... He's not called spannerman for nothing and I was lumbered with him for the rest of the day (he's not diesel qualified) as secondman.
Someone else told me about a can of beans exploding on the heating plate in a 47 - windscreen blown out and cab decorated with beans - not popular.>
