And we won't mention the time the track crew rode the handcar to Devils Gate, parked it at the end of track and went into town to get some lunch which we (opps, let it slip) decided to eat while riding the hand car back to Silver Plume chained to the rear of the train. Being hungry, we hastily attached the chain to one of the rear platform railing uprights, off to one side a little. Leaving Devils Gate and rounding the first sharp curve approaching the Low Bridge the too-short chain (which was unfortunately attached slightly to the outside of the curve) yanked the hand car off the track. There we were (Mike Squibb and I, if you must know) with our lunch spread all over the deck of the hand car anticipating eating while enjoying a nice, leisurely trip up the hill when all hell broke loose, scattering all our food and shaking us up pretty good. Luckily the Conductor (Ron Keiser) was standing on the rear platform and pulled the air. He was quite amused - we weren't.
This was before the time we had a motorcar and the only way the track crew had to get around was to coast down the hill on the hand car and get pulled back up by the train.
Needless to say this was definitely one of those "live and learn" episodes.
Any more good stories, and, should we start a new thread for this?
